Morgan Freeman in hospital after car accident

Morgan Freeman, here with wife Myrna, is fighting for his life after a car accident in Mississippi

Morgan Freeman was a serious car accident Sunday night in Mississippi. He is critically ill after being airlifted to hospital following his car crash.

Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman, 71, was travelling east on a highway in a rural area of Tallahatchie County when his vehicle veered off the edge of the road just a few miles from his home.

The Hollywood star and a female passenger had to be cut free from their vehicle after the smash, which occurred at 11.30pm on Sunday night.

Though the accident was serious, Freeman was conscious as he was pulled him from the car, according to Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, who was on the scene of the accident.

“He was lucid, conscious,” McFerrin told the Associated Press. “He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”

Emergency crews pulled Freeman and his passenger Demaris Meyer from the car and airlifted them to the Regional Medical Centre in Memphis more than 100 miles from the scene of the crash.

The accident is currently under investigation, but no alcohol was involved, Mississippi Highway Patrol told Access. The spokesperson went on to say that no charges have been filed against Freeman.
